FLY-HALF Duncan Weir is “one of the bravest rugby players you will find” according to his Worcester Warriors team-mate Niall Annett.

Weir was presented with a drop goal chance to secure a dramatic victory for Warriors in their opening Premiership clash against Wasps last Saturday.

But the Scotland international sent his shot wide as Wasps inflicted a painful 21-20 defeat on Worcester at Sixways.

Weir, 27, looked anguished at the final whistle but hooker Annett is confident the stand-off will “come back out firing” when Warriors visit Sale Sharks on Sunday (3pm).

“I think Dunky is one of the bravest rugby players you will find,” Annett said.

“He stepped up multiple times last year for his former club Edinburgh and nailed those.

“It is no reflection on him (that we lost).

“The game was there to be won before that and we probably didn’t close it out.

“I thought he showed great character to put himself in the position (to take the drop goal) as that is the sort of person he is. You have got to give him credit for that.

“He is one of the most resilient, performance-based people I know and there is no doubt that he will come back out firing next weekend and produce a big performance.”

Weir who has won 27 caps for Scotland joined Warriors this summer after an injury-hit season with Edinburgh.

“He takes a lot on leadership-wise and control-wise within the team,” Annett said.

“Outside halves generally do but I think he shoulders a lot and the boys respect him and listen to him.”

Warriors also squandered an early 13-0 lead to lose to Wasps but Annett believes his side will bounce back against Sale.

“There is no doubt we will be able to pick ourselves up,” said Annett who made his first home league appearance since November 2016 last weekend.

“That’s never been an issue with this squad.

“I think we will show resilience, work hard this week and be ready to go again next weekend.

“The AJ Bell Stadium is not an easy place to go.

“Any time I have played there it has been very difficult and Sale are always a very quality outfit and know how to play the conditions there.

“We will have a good week and hopefully build on some of the positive things we did last Saturday.”
