DIRECTOR of rugby Adam Drew is determined not to suffer more Twickenham heartache as Droitwich players bid to return home as cup heroes.

Drew’s side will make their second trip to England’s national stadium in 12 months on Sunday (3pm) when they take on Camberley in the RFU Intermediate Cup final.

Last year saw Droitwich make a dream run to the RFU Senior Vase final only to lose 37-15 to Farnham.

But Drew insisted his team were “a lot stronger” this season having won 21 of their 22 games in Midlands Two West (South) and were ready to seize their chance this time around.

“I don’t think we could believe we got to Twickenham last year,” he said.

“But having lost it left us with a bitter pill to swallow.

“We made a couple of silly errors and Farnham capitalised on them.

“But we have learned from those mistakes and we are a lot stronger than last year’s team.

“The league we are in is quite tough and York, who we played in the semi-final, were a massive team with big, powerful players.

“So if we can overcome a side like York we can overcome any team on the day.”

An army of fans are expected to make the journey to Twickenham to cheer on Droitwich.

“It would mean a massive amount to a lot of people if we were to win,” Drew continued.

“I doubt we would get there again as we can’t enter the competition next year as it is not open to us.

“We have got one more shot at it and we are going to take the bull by the horns.”

Droitwich will be without full-back Luke Penn (hamstring) and wingers Brad Cook (knee) and Phil Shore (neck) through injury.

But Drew believes his team will have too much up front for Camberley who stormed to the London Two South West title this season.

“Luke, Brad and Phil are three very key players for our side and more than likely would have started,” Drew said.

“But that has opened the door for other players and I am sure they will rise to the occasion.

“We have also got a lot who played last year and they are not going to want to lose again.

“Camberley have got a very good set of backs but I think we can out-muscle them in the forwards and if we can starve them of the ball then we have got every chance of coming away with the trophy.”

Droitwich finished their league campaign last Saturday with a 38-26 victory over Evesham at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground.

Brad Smith bagged a hat-trick, Louis Ellsmore notched a double and Nat Maginnis scored the other try in the thrilling home win.

“It was a very good victory as it means we finish with over 100 points and seven points clear of Malvern,” Drew said.

“It also puts us in a good frame of mind moving forward to Twickenham.”
