BROMSGROVE Sporting boss Paul Smith pulled no punches following his side's 3-0 defeat at Shepshed Dynamo in the Midland League Premier Division.

In the wake of only their second league reverse this season, Smith insisted: "We got exactly what we deserved and that was a spanking!

"I've got no complaints about the result. We didn't turn up and we didn't play well.

"The pitch was heavy as a result of a massive downpour during Friday night and Saturday morning and we knew it was going to be a battle.

"But I'm not going to go overboard. I don't go overboard when we win and the same thing applies when we lose.

"It was just purely a completely bad day for everyone involved.

"We weren't complacent. I warned the players about that in training on Thursday and they were warned about complacency again before the game.

"After we went 1-0 down, we had three really good chances to score - but we didn't take those chances.

"Reece Hewitt had an overhead kick that hit the inside of the post and came out again, while Joe Ward broke through twice but couldn't convert.

"If he had, it might have been a different game, but now we have to draw a line under it and move on."

Luckily for Sporting, leaders Coleshill Town also lost, crashing at home 3-2 to third placed Sporting Khalsa.

It means Sporting remain second in the table, one point adrift of Coleshill, but with two games in hand.

Sporting were due to face Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One South side Romulus this week in the Birmingham Senior Cup before entertaining Rugby Town on Saturday when back on Midland League duty.

Smith will wait to see whether Wade Malley and Max Loveridge recover from injury in time to be included.

Malley has missed the past three weeks with an ankle injury while Loveridge has been out for a month with a calf problem.

But striker Jason Cowley will certainly be missing through suspension.

Sporting have been handed no favours in the next round of the FA Vase.

Last season's semi-finalists have been drawn away to Midland League rivals Sporting Khalsa.
