Alvechurch boss Ian Long hopes big FA Cup win will spark a surge in support

The Church cruised to a 5-1 win in Shropshire and such was their dominance, that the game was virtually wrapped up by half time.

Church have now booked a trip to Evo Stik Northern Premier side Grantham Town in the second qualifying round which takes place on September 16.

Now Long wants to see more people at their Lye Meadow ground to help back the players following their impressive start to the season.

Long said: "We have a very loyal band of supporters who follow us week-in, week-out but it would be nice to see a few more people from the village.

"Even if we could add an extra 50 people to the gate, it would make a big difference.

"I'd like to see a few disgruntled Blues and Villa supporters come and watch us play. Watching non-league football is a bit like a throw back in time. You can tackle properly and not every foul is a booking.

"We're a club which I feel is going in the right direction - both on and off the pitch but like many others, we rely solely on gate receipts and sponsorship. We're not in it for the money."

Church made light work of Market Drayton when racing into a 4-0 lead by half time.

Tom Turton put them ahead with an eighth minute penalty before prolific marksman Josh March hammered home a first half hat-trick. Javia Roberts added a fifth late in the second half.

Long admitted: "We took our foot off the gas in the second half, even though we'd told them not to do it during half time, but when you're winning by such a margin, it's only human nature.

"I thought the referee spoilt the game in the second half and dished out far too many bookings when they weren't warranted. From my point of view, it took the gloss off our performance, which is disappointing as I'd been very pleased with the standard of refereeing this season up until Saturday".

Alvechurch were due to meet Basford United from Nottingham this week before they travel to Sheffield side Stocksbridge on Saturday.
