THE inaugural Droitwich charity racketlon team event was hosted by Rivers Leisure and the town’s high school.

Six groups of five competed consecutively at table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis.

The event was organised and supervised by Spa’s Lauren Whiteman who has been selected for the Great Britain team for the European Championships in Vienna next month.

The University of Nottingham eventually beat Droitwich Rivers in a close final.

Despite competing for more than 400 points it came down to a difference of one as the students became the first winners of the Whiteman Cup.

The competitors are keen for a repetition in 2018.

Throughout the day each of the teams played three matches consisting of two men’s singles, one women’s singles and one men’s doubles.

Droitwich mayor Shaun Best attended the event and more than £250 was donated to mental health charity Mind.
