THERE was heartbreak for Droitwich after narrowly missing out on their first Worcestershire Cricket League Division One victory of the season with a final-over defeat at the hands of Worcester.

After Spa posted an impressive 269-8 Phil Thomas grabbed two wickets in the first over of the reply.

But the hosts had not accounted for the big-hitting Andrew Wilks and a well-paced innings from Mo Adeel that kept Worcester in contention aided by several spilled catches and expensive overs.

Following Wilks’ departure for 50 Adeel (118 not out) kept up the momentum but the eighth wicket fell with 62 runs still needed.

Jabran Khalid then delivered a cameo of 26 as the pair’s experience saw Worcester home with four balls left as Adeel hit 11 fours and six sixes.

Spa’s Jordan Renau also deserved a century but fell one short as he was cruelly dismissed lbw after 15 fours and a six.

Martyn Davies (58), Greg Mazgajczyk (34) and Ian Cottrill (36) also weighed in but Spa could not reach 300.

The seconds maintained their position in the Division Two promotion places after a nine-wicket win at Wormelow.

On bowling out their hosts for 132 Dave Huntbatch struck 86no from 62 balls including 13 fours and four sixes.

Ollie Sankey recorded 4-29 while Carl Thomson and Martin Woodward took 2-24 and 2-17 respectively.

The thirds lost by 124 runs at Stourbridge in Division Five.

Despite George Taylor’s 62 Spa failed to overhaul 265-7 after Stourbridge’s Sam Rodgerson made 110.

Veteran Steve Perry claimed 5-10 in the return fixture as the fourths sneaked home by nine runs.

Tom Goss hit another half-century as Spa posted 164.

On Saturday Spa firsts, now 42 points from safety, travel to Feckenham and the seconds and thirds take on Enville.

The fourths play Bromyard in a friendly.
