DIRECTOR of rugby Adam Drew was in good spirits despite Droitwich’s 37-15 Twickenham Stadium defeat in the RFU Senior Vase final to Farnham.

Converted tries from Gabriel Hills for Farnham and Sam O’Brien for Droitwich as well as a penalty for both sides ensured the score was level at 10-10 at the break.

Hills crossed for a second followed by David Hurley while Toby Salmon also kept the scoreboard ticking over for Farnham as they had the better of the second half.

Peter Knight’s try gave Droitwich hope but Salmon kicked his 15th point of the match before his brother Mike scored the Surrey side’s fourth try of the game late on.

It was the first defeat of the season for the Midlands Three West (South) champions.

Drew said: “It was a very good experience and sometimes the result just goes against the grain a bit. The better team won on the day.”

The experience of playing at Twickenham was one Droitwich will never forget and Drew praised the RFU for organising the day.

He said: “It was all very emotional for the lads. We had a stadium tour on Friday which is when it really sank in for everyone.

“I have to give credit to the RFU for the whole experience. Everything was done so professionally and it was a great day regardless of the result.”

And Drew was determined his side will return to Twickenham in the future.

He added: “Next season it could happen. It’s hard to say because obviously it’s a long season but we’ll definitely get back there at some point.”

Farnham, promoted from London Three South West this season, were first to cross with Hills showing pace and power to tear down the wing for the first converted try.

After twice going close Droitwich finally crossed with O’Brien bundling over from close range after fine work from Aron Middleton and Scott-Walker converted for 10-7.

Farnham levelled with the final kick of the half through Toby Salmon and he sent over another penalty shortly after the restart.

Hills burst through for his second try and Salmon converted for 20-10.

Moments later Hurley finished off a fine move on the right wing with Salmon again converting at the famous stadium.

Spa flanker Knight powered over with 20 minutes left but a penalty 10 minutes later gave Farnham a 15-point lead and captain Mike Salmon crossed late on to seal victory.
