DROITWICH Spa Badgers extended their winning hockey streak with a 3-2 win over county rivals Stourport.

After beating two different Worcester sides 2-0 and 3-1, Spa made a lacklustre start in their latest fixture and went 2-0 down quickly.

Droitwich awoke and pushed Stourport back with Joe Cairns missing the target at the back post after a good move involving Matthew Gurr and Owen Ross.

George Battin skewed another effort wide as the pressure increased.

After a rousing speech from coach Simon Blackmore, Spa were on the front foot from the restart.

Cairns’ quick shot sailed wide but he then flicked the ball into the roof of the net to reduce the arrears from Fernando Prendiville’s powerful cross.

Gurr and Prendiville had further chances with the latter finishing off a fine penalty corner to level after Stourport’s keeper had previously denied them.

Stourport sought the winner on the counter-attack with home keeper Marc Chorley saving.

But Spa looked composed and Sam Radford kept the team moving forward with Cairns bagging his second to give the home side a much-deserved victory.

Meanwhile, Droitwich women lost 3-1 at home to leaders Bromsgrove in Worcestershire League Division Two.

Spa started the stronger side and quickly got into their passing stride but could not find the composure to pierce the backline.

Bromsgrove grew into the game, using their substitutes to good effect, and opened the scoring from a penalty corner struck low into the bottom corner.

In the second half, the visitors stretched their advantage as Spa did not get the run of the ball.

But Droitwich reduced the arrears with 10 minutes to go thanks to a goal from captain Lucy Hine.

Spa women’s seconds drew 1-1 at Tenbury seconds in Division Three to end their three-game losing streak.

Spa settled quicker and created the best chances with Julie Haller putting them ahead.

Despite stout defensive play, Tenbury equalised following a penalty corner.

In December’s Worcestershire under 11s tournament, Droitwich welcomed sides from Stourport, Worcester, Kings Heath Pickwick, Colwall and Malvern and Bromsgrove.

The standard of hockey was high despite the cold, wintry conditions.

Spa played four games for the first time and acquitted themselves well with narrow defeats to Bromsgrove A and B and Colwall and Malvern and a draw with Kings Heath.

Maddy Wooton-Porter was on target as the team showed fine work-rate and a team ethic which bodes well for the second half of the season.
