FAIRFIELD Villa produced a fabulous performance but still lost out in the Les James Cup when going down 4-3 in extra time against Alvis Sporting Club.
Villa spokesman Paul Oakes insisted: "They players gave their utmost and we couldn't have asked anything more from them."
Dan Wilkes had fired Villa in front but Alvis levelled straight from the resulting kick-off.
Alvis were rampant at this stage and it took a series of spectacular saves from goalkeeper Chris Mole to keep them at bay - but he couldn't prevent Alvis from taking a 2-1 lead just before half time.
Eager Alvis added a third at the start of second half exchanges before Villa battled back to level through Pete Jenzey and a second Wilkes goal.
Wilkes was then denied his hat-trick when he had a third goal ruled out for a disputed offside decision.
Alvis sealed victory when they scored from a quickly taken corner that caught the Villa defence napping.
Oakes added: "It was a great game and one we didn't deserve to lose, especially as we went onto dominate the second half.
" Alvis are a very good side and they passed the ball around extremely well. You could see why they haven't been beaten this season and the fact they've got into the winning habit."
Villa have an immediate opportunity for revenge as they host Alvis this Saturday in a Midland League Division Two match when they will be boosted by the return of Lewis Smith, Joe Brookes and Dan Price.
