CAPTAIN Mark Evenson did not know whether to laugh or cry as Bromsgrove’s frustrating inconsistency again came to the fore.

Birmingham and District Division One safety was all but secured on Saturday courtesy of an impressive batting display against Bridgnorth.

Ashley Newfield (76) and Jayden Levitt (56) put on 117 for the first wicket with their stellar showing backed up by Alexei Kervezee (59) en route to 280 for six.

Graeme Whiles (2-13) and Kervezee (2-16) quickly stifled the response with Newfield (3-18) making light work of the middle order to restrict the visitors to 103 all out.

However, a meek display at Barnards Green two days later highlighted why Evenson’s pre-season promotion hopes have failed to materialise.

Levitt (30) was the only significant scorer as Bromsgrove were seen off for 109 runs and despite Newfield’s (5-31) efforts with the ball, Barnards Green registered 110 for two off 25.4 overs.

Evenson said: “Saturday was the perfect game. We batted very well and to get them out so quickly was a top effort but Monday was typical of our season.

“It was the total opposite in most aspects and to get bowled out for 109 shows our inconsistent streak. We have not found enough to put together performances in back-to-back matches."

Looking ahead to 2017, Evenson added: “We have a few lads going to university so whether they travel back is up to them. It won’t be easy because some are off to places such as Reading and Cardiff.

“Our first priority is to try to win our last three matches this year, make the league table look a bit more flattering and set us up well for next year.

“It has been one of those seasons. We sat down at the start and set our sights on promotion and while we started well, we couldn't build any proper momentum and have hovered around the bottom four or five, which is probably about right.”

Bromsgrove host Moseley on Saturday (noon) and Evenson anticipates naming an unchanged side.
