BROMSGROVE eased their relegation worries with a much-needed win in Birmingham League Division One as an under strength side defeated in-form Himley by five wickets.

The Boars were missing Ben Tegg, Ashley Newfield and Jayden Levitt but recorded their first win in a month at St Godwalds to open a 41-point gap over the relegation zone.

The hosts won the toss and bowled out their Staffordshire rivals for 135.

Alex Wilkinson (6-36) produced his best spell of the season, while Graeme Whiles took 3-13.

In reply, opening batsmen Alexei Kervezee (26) and Lewis Cordes (31) handed Bromsgrove a solid start, before Alistair Hickman (33), Tom Hill (13) and Jack Harding (17) got among the runs as Bromsgrove made 138-5 in 38 overs.

Captain Mark Evenson said: “This was a fantastic result considering we were missing a few first-teamers.

“It was a good toss to win and as we bowled very well, particularly Alex Wilkinson.

“Alex started the season very well but he faded before bouncing back. He’s reined in his pace but had a lot more control and bowled well.”

Bromsgrove, who remain third from bottom, are set to welcome back Tegg, Levitt and Newfield for Saturday’s testing trip to second-placed Dorridge (noon start).

“It was important to get a win on the board and hopefully we can build on this,” added Evenson.

“We’ve got a few players back which is going to make selection very difficult.”

The seconds made light work of Stourbridge, who were bowled out for 157 thanks to Matt Banham’s 5-41. Tom Russell (2-21) and Max Smith (2-23) also picked up two wickets apiece.

In reply, George Cracknell scored 47 before Scott Burrows and Matt Russell combined in an third-wicket partnership to see the Boars home in 35.2 overs.

Burrows finished 49 not out and Russell 43 not out to help the seconds stay in touch with the lead leaders.

Bromsgrove Thirds maintained their winning run with a 29-run success over Halesowen Thirds.
