CATSHILL Middle School student Sam Jones represented Hereford and Worcester impressively as he bagged a third place at the The Mason Trophy.

Jones ran an English Schools’ Athletics Association (ESAA) entry standard in the junior boys 200 metres, finishing third in 23.90 seconds.

He was part of the county team which which had been chosen for this event through impressive performances at school, district and then county competitions.

The Trophy also serves as an indicator for selectors to choose their team for the final and main event in the schools’ athletics calendar such as the ESAA National Track and Field Championships, which are being held in Gateshead next month.

The best age category performance for Hereford and Worcestershire came from the intermediate boys team, who finished third out of the 10 counties. Overall, Hereford and Worcester finished eighth overall.

Woodrush High School’s Chris McLeod was in good form in the intermediate category, running the 3,000m in nine minutes and16.60s to take third. Sam Chance from Droitwich High School, bagged bronze with a throw of 47.23 metres.

St Augustine’s pupil Josh Pearson took the 400m bronze in 51.42s.

Harry Liversidge from Bromsgrove School gained ESAA entry standard in the 110m hurdles, just missing out on a medal in fourth place (13.89s).

In the intermediate girls competition, Olivia Jones from Heathfield School Kidderminster, won the high jump with an ESAA entry level jump of 1.65m, while Bromsgrove School’s Abi Saker took a bronze medal in the 3000m with a time of 10m34s.

The 4x100m Relays also produced further medals and ESAA entry standards. The Junior Boys team of Darian Moore (Royal Grammar, Worcester), Sam Jones (Catshill Middle, Bromsgrove), Sam Roberts (Bromsgrove School) and Christian Timms (South Bromsgrove) took silver in a time of 47.2s.

The Intermediate Boys team of Dan Banks (Tudor Grange, Worcester), Ollie Gould (De Montfort, Evesham), Harry Liversidge (Bromsgrove School) and Pearson took bronze in 44.8s.

The Junior Girls team of Olivia Corcoran, Beth Lloyd (both Bromsgrove School), Florence Ikpeme (Prince Henry’s, Evesham) and Danielle Hopkins (The Chase, Malvern) placed sixth but ran inside the ESSA standard with 51.6s.

Previously, Lloyd shone at the Hereford & Worcester Schools County Track & Field Championships, which were held at Nunnery Wood sports complex.

The youngster from Alvechurch represented Bromsgrove School and won the junior girls 100 metres in 13.3 seconds. She bagged a second gold when she won the shot putt with a throw on 0.98 metres. The event saw top athletes from schools all across the region, who had qualified to take part for one of eight districts competing.

As well as medals and the opportunity to claim the title of county champion in their event, athletes were also hoping to impress the selectors to take them forward to the Mason Trophy Competition.

Despite the rain showers there were some excellent results. Olivia Corcoran, also of Bromsgrove School, won 75m Junior Girl Hurdles (12.6s), Javelin (29.29m) as was 2nd in Long Jump (4.81m). Tayla Mullins (RSA Academy Arrowvale, Redditch) beat her own junior girls record from last year in the Hammer taking it from 19.23m to an incredible 32 95m. The Wyre Forest District Junior Girls team set a new 4x100m relay record of 54.3s. In the junior boys competition, Darian Moore from Royal Grammar, Worcester won the 100m (11.9s) as well as the 200m (24.7s).

Tristen Dunn from Haybridge High School won three events - shot (11. 81m), discus (33.11m) and hammer (34.95m).

Sam Jones of Catshill Middle was runner-up in both 100m and 200m finishing in times of 12.2s and 24.9s respectively. Wyre Forest District set a second relay record of the day this time for the Junior Boys who completed the four stages in 53.4s.

Olivia Jones from Heathfield School, Wolverley, had a great competition winning the high jump in 1.60m, the 80m hurdles (13.1s) and placing second in the long jump (4.51m).

Candy Lockett of Bromsgrove School clinched the senior girls hammer with new championship record of 41.85m and also won the discus (27.88m) and placed second in both the shot and javelin.
