BARNT Green continue to experience contrasting results in league and cup.

The Cherry Hill Road side maintained their upsurge in form in the Birmingham League Premier when they defeated defending champions Shrewsbury by three wickets on Sunday.

But they suffered disappointment in the ECB National T20 when they were edged out by Barnards Green.

It was the second week in a row that Green had exited a cup competition after going down to Wolverhampton in the National Knockout Cup.

They started the weekend in impressive form in the league at home as they won an up and down game against their opponents from Shropshire.

Skipper Andy Sutton won the toss and put Shrewsbury into bat and he made an early breakthrough when he had opener Will Parton caught by Faisal Shahid for nought.

The in-form Sutton also removed Ed Foster for eight but Ben Stebbing (75) and Oliver Westbury (109) produced an impressive third wicket stand as Shrewsbury rallied from 28-2 to 135-3, before Sam Cheshire caught Stebbings.

Westbury went onto to complete his century but the wickets tumbled around him as Sutton (6-38) and Luke Radford (3-31) tore through the visitor's batting order as they were dismissed for 226.

Green suffered a disastrous start to their reply as Cheshire (5), William Baker (4) and Tom Banton (1) went cheaply.

Matt Lamb steadied the ship and then forged a decisive 116 run partnership with Tom Brown (63) as Barnt Green rallied from 65-6 to 181-7.

When Lamb's innings of 108 came to an end, Brown kept the victory charge going as Green made 228-7 in 55 overs.

Sutton said: "It was a game that ebbed and flowed but we bowled very well and Tom and Matt produced a brilliant partnership to turn the game to our advantage when we looked in trouble."

Green will be aiming for a third straight league victory when they go to struggling Kidderminster on Saturday (noon start).

But their hopes of progressing in the National T20 were ended in a tight encounter against Barnards Green.

Radford took three wickets and as Barnards, who had won the toss and opted to bat first, made 172-7.

Meanwhile, Barnt Green made a strong start to their reply but when Cheshire, who had made a rapid 95 from 62 balls, stalled when he was run out and they fell short on 162-6 in 20 overs.

Sutton added: "It was disappointing to exit another cup competition.

"The game was close and it was frustrating to fall 11 runs short."
