BROMSGROVE’S Vicki Law was celebrating after the Great Britain women’s American Football League team finished runners-up at the IFAF Women’s European Championships.

The 23-year-old was part of the squad which made it all the way to the final in Spain before losing to Finland in the showpiece game final.

Law earned her selection after a series of strong displays for Birmingham Lions.

Team GB made an impressive start when they stunned group favourites Germany 17-6 in the opening fixture of the IFAF Women’s European championships.

Phoebe Schecter was named MVP as a strong running game and suffocating defence saw the Lions overwhelm their German counterparts in the Spanish heat.

The tournament rookies executed a precise game-plan, which saw the veteran German team pinned back in their own territory and prevented from running the football to reverse field position.

That meant a win over Sweden would seal their first ever final place in the final.

Quarterback Jo Kilby threw for two touchdowns and the defence forced multiple Swedish turnovers, including a fumble returned for a touchdown, as the Lions won 30-14.

But they found a stiff test in eventual winners Finland, who secured a 50-12 victory to be crowned champions.

The game had been evenly balanced but the Northern European side turned on the style in the fourth quarter to win the game.

Despite defeat, such near success at the tournament marked a big step forward for Great Britain, which had only taken up the full version of the sport game in 2014.
