CAPTAIN Andy Sutton feels there’s more to work on despite a perfect start to the season in league and cup for Barnt Green.

The Cherry Hill Road side kicked-off the Birmingham League Premier with a six-wicket win over Kenilworth Wardens on Saturday.

They followed it up the next day with an eight-wicket thrashing of Wombourne to progress into the next regional round of the National Knockout Cup.

Green had went into the weekend in good form after booking their place in the Graham Willamson Trophy and continued to demonstrate their confidence.

Kenilworth didn’t make it easy and reached 281-9 in their 50 overs, inspired by Sitanu Kotak’s 109.

Josh Poysden took three wickets, while Sutton and Alexander Wood two each.

In response, Green recovered from the early loss of William Baker but the introduction of teenager Matt Lamb boosted their batting power.

Lamb, who is an academy prospect at Warwickshire, hit 108 runs off 91 balls, including ten fours and five sixes, as Green accelerated from 105-3 to 282-4.

Solid batting from Sam Cheshire (43), Luke Radford, Sutton (35) and Josh Poysden (30) allowed the 19-year-old the freedom to score runs.

Sutton said: “It was a good game and Kenilworth put together a good partnership in the middle order and threw their bat at the end to get up to a good score.

“But I said to the players be aggressive and we batted well, especially Matt.

“He’s been at Bromsgrove School so we’ve seen him much but he’s been playing in Australia over the winter and has coming back tall and strong.

“What was pleasing was we were able to support him, so he had the freedom to keep scoring.”

Green made it two wins over the weekend as they put Wombourne to the sword.

Sutton took four wickets and Tom Brown three as Wombourne were dismissed for 139. Spinner Jacques Banton, 13, also showed promise.

Opening batsman Cheshire then lead the way with 83 off 26 balls as Green powered to 142-2 in the 11th over.

“Sam’s batting was Brendan McCullon-esque, it was great to see.

“It has been a very good start but there are things to work on.”

Green continue the league at Dorridge on Saturday (noon start) and then play Shrewsbury away on Sunday in the Trophy.
