Droitwich 27, Old Yardlieans 15

DROITWICH Spa’s resurgence continued with a second successive win after they defeated Midlands Division Two West (South) rivals Old Yardlieans on Saturday.

In tough conditions, the visitors started the brighter scoring a try after the first two minutes.

Spa dug deep with a fine individual try by winger Sam Davenport, who produced a chip and chase and score under the posts.

The hosts upped the tempo and winger Dan Wilkinson used his pace and power to beat three opposition defenders and score in the corner with Bobby Scott-Walker converting.

Yardley kicked the corners to earn good field position and they made it count when they replied with a try of their own, before Chris Danks notched over a penalty kick for Spa to go into half time 17-10 up.

The second half started with Danks kicking Spa into good attacking areas on the pitch but unfortunately for home side they weren't winning their own set pieces.

Good turnover ball by Luke Topping allowed Stephen Poke to gift quick ball to Davenport, who again produced a brilliant solo try to run the length of the pitch and score under the post much to the rapture of the crowd.

Ed Wormington then added the conversion and a penalty of his own to put Spa in a healthy lead.

Spa now knew they needed one more try for the bonus point, but to the visitors’ credit they dug deep and didn't give in.

Russ Brown went close for Spa before Yardley scored a try of their own on the last play of the game.

This was a much-needed victory for Spa who continue to pick up points in their quest for survival.

Double-try scoring hero Davenport added after the game that Spa are showing great spirit and he hopes they continue this throughout the remainder of the season.

Spa travel to Banbury on Saturday.
