BROMSGROVE must stem the flood of points at the back, insists head coach Dan Protherough.

The Boars boss was slightly frustrated as the Finstall Park outfit scored four tries but were edged out 33-31 by Lichfield at home on Saturday, despite them picking up two more handy bonus points.

Of all the top half sides, Bromsgrove are second highest scorers with 203 points but have the leakiest defence after letting in 155 in seven matches.

Against Lichfield, tries for Jon Critchlow and Will Harris had seen the Boars leading 17-14 at half-time.

But the course of the game early in the second half when Gregg Massey intercepted Critchlow’s pass and ran the length of the pitch to touch down.

Lichfield increased their lead with another try and while Bromsgrove rallied with a Chris Morgan try, which was converted by Critchlow and also forced a penalty score, it was not enough.

“We just didn’t play well enough,” said the head coach.

“We didn’t execute our gameplan properly and we paid the price for it.

“The game was tight and unfortunately the turning point was the breakaway try.

“We got back into the game but we scored our try a bit late and there wasn’t time to get back into the game.”

“But we need to find a way to let in less points, if you’re scoring 31 points in each match then you should be winning a lot more games.”

Despite last weekend’s setback, the Boars remain sixth in the table in the National Three Midlands.

They will be looking to bounce back at third-placed Longton on Saturday.

But Protherough has warned that Saturday’s defeat to Lichfield proves there are no easy matches.

He said: “Lichfield were in a very similar position to Longton when we played them last week, so we’ve go to make sure we play well. There’s still more to come from us going forward as well, there were opportunities we didn’t take last weekend.”
