PHIL Horton scored bagged a hat-trick of tries as Bromsgrove won their first away match in seven months by overcoming seeing off Burton 32-21 on Saturday.

The Boars' triumph was recorded their first win away from Finstall Park since February’s successwin againstover Dudley Kingswinford.

It means that Bromsgrove, who suffered relegation last season, have made a solid start to life in the National Three Midlands with two wins out of four and ten points already on the board.

They had to show determination to win the game in Staffordshire as they had been trailing 21-10 after a playing poorly in the opening 20 minutes.

But a Horton's hat-trick and a try for Tom Hunt made sure of the win and cemented Bromsgrove’s mid-table spot.

“We made some sloppy defensive errors in the first 20 minutes and we were punished but came back well,” said head coach Dan Protherough.

“We went into half-time with the lead but probably should have consolidated more. Burton were strong and they were the best scrummaging side we had played this season so even though they’re bottom them are a good side.

“We are still learning about winning and results like this will help," Protherough said.

Bromsgrove will be looking to secure for local bragging rights on Saturday, when they entertain DKs, (3pm kick off,) although Paddy Longden and Reece Chapman have injury concerns.

The Black Country side are still finding their feet after going down last season and are second from bottom with four successive defeats.

Paddy Longden and Reece Chapman are injury concerns for tomorrow’s clash.

Protherough added: “DK are a great community club. They had a tough season last year and are still settling down this season but this is a very tough game.

“If we can be more clinical and cut out the errors then we will be fine. We’ve played three of our first four games away from home, so it will be nice to be back at home with a good crowd.”
