Bromsgrove 25, Bournville 24

RICHARD Mahony produced an unerring performance with his boot as Bromsgrove commenced their home campaign in the National Midlands Division Three with a win.

The fly half topped off a classy display of kicking with a match-winning drop goal in added time and record the Boars' first league win at home since November 16 last year.

Despite falling behind to an early Alex Warner penalty, Bromsgrove were quickly into their stride.

With their pack in the ascendancy and the backs looking full of running a score looked inevitable and when a four on one overlap was created a try seemed certain.

Bournville’s last line of defence, winger Robert Chesner ,had other ideas and gambled on the interception to race the length of the field for a try under the posts, converted by Alex Warner.

This proved a temporary setback with the Town soon seizing the territorial advantage again.

Despite losing Chris McGregor to the sin bin,the the host's forwards continued to dominate with the flawless Mahony adding two further penalties to bring them back into contention.

Winger Reece Chapman Carry cruised in under the posts for what looked to be a superb try only to be called back for an earlier obstruction but it wasn’t long before winger Paddy Longden pounced on a loose pass to streak away for an excellent try.

Mahony added the extras to put Bromsgrove in the lead. Another penalty followed to give the home side a 19-10 lead at half-time.

The early second half initiative lay with Bromsgrove and a further Mahony penalty stretched the lead to 22-10 and the result was beginning to look a foregone conclusion but with the hosts appearing to tire, the visitors had other ideas and with their three quarters always keen to attack scored two further tries through wing Paul Sumner and dangerous centre, Robin Etough the first superbly converted from the touchline by Alex Warner.

With the clock ticking Bromsgrove launched another desperate attack and following a scrum beneath the Bournville posts Mahony calmly slotted a drop goal to win the game with the last kick of the match.
