Droitwich 20 Veseyans 14

DROITWICH moved into the next round of the North Midlands Shield with a hard-fought win.

A mobile Veseyans side opened the scoring with a converted try.

Spa stepped it up a gear and, from the kick-off, attacked the Vesayans try line and were awarded a penalty that Bobby Scott-Walker put over.

The hosts were now starting to build pressure and Scott-Walker touched down for a try and kicked the extra points after good work by Dave Oliver, Russ Brown and Mark Strutt.

In the second half, Spa defended well with Glenn Topping and Ben Ream in good form.

But Veseyans edged 14-10 ahead with a penalty after a concerted effort.

Droitwich hit back and a good break by Sean Walker allowed Rob Poke to flop over in the corner.

Scott-Walker continued his excellent kicking game and converted the try from the touchline. He then added another three points five minutes later with a stupendous drop goal from more than 30 metres out.

A superbly-organised defence prevented the visitors from snatching the lead at the end and Droitwich progressed through to the next round.

Spa travel to Pinley RFC this Saturday for their first game in the Midlands Division Two West (South).
