FAIRFIELD Villa boss Paul Oakes says his side are more than capable of winning the league this season.

Villa start their campaign in Division Two of the Midland Football League with an away trip to Paget Rangers this Saturday (3pm).

Oakes believes his side can go one better after a second-placed finish last season.

"Pre-season has gone really well and I'm pleased with how we have strengthened the side," he said. "There is no reason we can't improve on last season and win the league.

"It is always our aim to finish in the top four and have a good cup run. We have achieved that nearly every year that I've been here and I hope this season will be the same.

"We should be up there challenging and could even win it if that's the case.

Villa have brought in experience in the form of defender Ben Smith and forward Tom Smith from Wolverhampton Casuals.

The squad has also been strengthened by striker John Pykett and midfielder Danny Bostock.

Another player to impress during the club's pre-season preparations has been youngster Adam Dyer.

After travelling to take on Paget Rangers on Saturday, Fairfield will then welcome Kenilworth Town to the Recreation Ground the following weekend.

Oakes feels it is important his side get off to a good start.

He added: "It won't be easy going to Paget for the first game. They won promotion to the league last season and will be looking to make their mark.

"However, we ended last season with just one loss and one draw in the last 14 games. We now want to carry that form into this year and continue where we left off."
