COMMONWEALTH double bronze medal winner Jessica Varnish has been tipped to build on her success in Glasgow at the Rio Olympics.

Coach Dave Viner was delighted to see the 23-year-old win her first medals at a major multi-sport event after taking bronze in both the women’s sprint and 500m time trial.

But success in Scotland while representing England will now act as a springboard for the biggest stage of them all – Brazil in 2016.

He said: “It was absolutely fantastic to see Jess win her medals.

“I believe she is only just reaching her peak and in two years time in Rio she will only be stronger.”

Varnish’s success at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games also ensured she bounced back from her disappointment at the London 2012 Olympics, when her and team sprint partner Victoria Pendleton were disqualified for a technicality.

But Viner is convinced the Finstall flyer, who is a life member of Halesowen CC but now rides for father James’ team V-Sprint Racing Club, demonstrated her mental toughness.

After the disappointment of London, the gifted rider also had to cope with an injury which put her out of action for much of 2013.

But she has said the enforced break away from track cycling gave her much-needed perspective.

“It must have been incredibly hard for Jess after London but she has demonstrated fantastic mental toughness,” added Dave Viner.

“She has bounced back from her setback superbly and I genuinely believe she will only get stronger.”

England’s track cycling team have been locked in a fierce battle with Australia as the two cycling super-powers vied for supremacy.

As well as Varnish’s brace of bronzes, Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell won gold in the points and individual pursuit races respectively.

Her Halesowen CC club mate Helen Scott, who is one half of the Para-cycling team with Sophie Thornhill, took two golds in the tandem and 1,000m event.
