BROMSGROVE Tennis Club’s mens A team have made a flying start in the Winter League as they saw off Manor Park C 4-0.
Father and son duo of Roy and Steve Halfpenny played together as did Matt Kirkham with Ben Buckley.
Kirkham and Buckley had two straightforward victories, 6-2, 6-3 in their first rubber and 6-2, 6-1 in the second.
The Halfpenny boys started off well winning 6-1, 6-2 but then faced a much stiffer challenge in their second winning 6-1, 6-7, 7-6.
“We were kicking ourselves for letting a match point go in the second set, but buckled down and got the win. It’s always great to start the season with a 4-0 victory,” said Steve Halfpenny.
The Ladies D team saw off their newly-promoted club-mates from the G side.
The D team pairings of Connie Wedelich with Allyson Frizzell and Ros Cooke with Leslie Hodson came through in a close fought 4-0 victory.
The G team first pair of Anne Simper and Lorraine Russell put up stiff resistance losing 4-6, 4-6 to Wedelich and Frizzell and then pused Cooke and Hodson to three sets before being edged out.
G team second pair of Sue Forrest and Lisa Rushton performed well but went down 1-6, 2-6 and 1-6, 3-6.
D side captain Wedelich said: “It’s always difficult playing against club colleagues, but the team focused well and came through a match that was a lot closer than the score suggests. If the G team continue playing that well I’m sure they’ll stay up.”
The men’s E side opened up their season with an excellent 4-0 victory against Halesowen B.
Captain Alex Willis and John Casey edged two tie breaks to win the first rubber 7-6, 7-6 and they followed it up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the second.
The second pair of Tim Roland and Jack Walters played very well to secure comfortable 6-3, 6-2 victories in both their rubbers.
