Spa keep up spirited relegation battle
3:50pm Monday 2nd September 2013 in Local
DROITWICH made it three wins out of the last four matches but their hopes of escaping relegation from Worcestershire League Division One remain clouded in mystery.
Spa’s eighth wicket win over basements boys Oldswinford means they have a 26-point lead over second from bottom Burghill and Tillington.
However, with Evesham and Worcester looking as though they might be relegated into the county competition from the Birmingham League, rumours are rife three teams could be relegated into Division One this summer.
However, there is also unconfirmed speculation that Evesham may go straight into Worcester Division Three or even opt to join the Cotswold Hills League.
But Droitwich skipper Martyn Davies believes his in-form team must ignore the conjecture and keep striving to the points.
Spa end the season against at home to Hagley on Saturday and then at in-form Redditch on September 14 (both 1pm start).
“We’ve just got to forget all the talk that is going on and make sure we keep picking up results,” said Davies.
“At the moment only the bottom two are confirmed to go down and you can’t think about all the permutations.
“I think we will end with more points than teams in our position over the last six years but if we go down we can’t blame anybody but ourselves.
“We’ve come into some good form but it has come a little late.”
Droitwich dismissed Oldswinford for 149 with Davies taking four wickets and Mike Rogers two.
South African Mauritz Van Straten (73) continued his good form, while Max Young (64) also did well as Spa made151-2 in reply.
