Archers shoot down the Bears
8:00am Thursday 7th March 2013 in Local
BROMSGROVE Bears Ladies suffered an agonising 74-60 defeat against Cardiff Archers in the National League Division Two.
The Bears had scored 22 points in the first quarter but never recovered from the loss of point guard Jade Richmond after she suffered a knee injury despite the efforts of 16-year-olds Dani Caulwell and Cat Yang, who did their best to take the game to Cardiff.
The Welsh side, who had Great Britain Olympic guard Stef Collins playing for them, took control of the remaining quarters to win the game.
The under-15s boys team suffered a 121-46 loss at the hands of Northamptonshire Titans on Saturday and 120-20 defeat to Notts Nova on Sunday, as they continue on their steep learning curve during their first season in the National League.
The boys will continue to train off season on a Friday evening at the Ryland Centre from 6pm onwards and are on the look out for new squad members to further strenghthen the already existing squad as they step up to the under-16s age groups.
Meanwhile, the under-16s girls were edged out 47-43 by National League rivals Team Solent in Southampton last Friday.
Bears took the lead early on and went into the second half with the scores poised at 25-25.
But they fell behind by five points after a weak scoring third quarter.
Bromsgrove hit back in the final period, with Shanice Turner bagging the most points, but Solent matched them to win.
The men had an east Midlands double-header against Derby on Saturday and Leicester Warriors on Sunday.
They lost 82-69 to Derby, with Andrew McLean and Hayden Thomas scoring 20 points each but against Leicester, they bounced back to win 67-53.
The men face Sporting Club West Bromwich Albion in their final game of the season on Saturday at Bromsgrove School Arena (7.30pm start).
Children get in free with a paying adult and entry costs £3.
Refreshments are available and there will be half-time entertainment from the Fireworks cheerleading squad.
