Wright’s solid Spanish debut
CHARGE: Alec Wright keeps up the pace with his opponents.
CHARGE: Alec Wright keeps up the pace with his opponents.

BLACKWELL speedster Alec Wright raced to an impressive 25th place in the first round of the Spanish CEV championship in Valencia.

The CEV is the most competitive 125cc championship outside of MotoGP, with all three of the British riders currently enjoying great success on the world 125cc stage having previously raced in the Spanish series.

The level of competition is so high that qualification on the grid is an achievement, and that was Wright and his Repli-Cast UK team's goal for the weekend.

The strong winds during both of Friday's practice sessions caused problems and they were far from ideal learning conditions for the teenage race ace.

Thankfully the conditions improved on Saturday and the final tweaks to the bike were made for the qualifying sessions.

The Repli-Cast Honda was out in the first of the two qualifying groups and this left Wright with an anxious wait to see if he had made the grid.

But there was no need to be worried as he comfortably qualified on row nine.

Sunday's race day got off to a wet start, though it allowed the team to dial Wright's bike to a wet set up in the warm up.

However, the conditions dried and a good start from Wright saw him gain several places on the first corner.

He was then able to keep pace with a chasing group of riders for the remainder of the race.

The bunch swapped positions every corner, and they crossed the line after 18 laps with tenths of a second between them.

Wright was visibly pleased with his position, a great result on his first visit to the Valencia race track.

The next round sees the series move to the Circuit of Catalunya on May 25.
