Old Laurentians 35, Droitwich 13

DROITWICH paid the price for a sluggish start as they fell to defeat in their opening match of the Midlands Two West (South) season.

The hosts took the lead from the kick-off as they drove over for a converted try from a poorly controlled scrum.

Laurentians stretched their lead to 10-0 moments later with a penalty after Spa were penalised at the breakdown.

Sean Walker pulled a penalty back for Spa but Laurentians bagged a second try to go 17-3 ahead.

Mark Strutt was sin-binned as Laurentians scored another penalty to take a 20-3 lead into the break.

Droitwich came out in the second period and produced an improved display.

However, the hosts scored another converted try, before Matthew Jupp was sin-binned.

Another Droitwich infringement was then punished by a penalty.

But Droitwich scored when the the pack, led by Nicholas Godfrey, saw quick ball set Craig Mortlemans away to make it 30-8.

Buoyed by the score, Spa took the game to their opponents and Dean Goddard touched down.

But Laurentians went over late on.

Droitwich entertain Kenilworth at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground on Saturday (3pm ko).
