DROITWICH’S dream of staging a late assault on the Worcestershire League Division One title over the Bank Holiday weekend were washed away by yet more rain.

Spa travelled to fourth-placed Astwood Bank on Saturday, but just 15 overs of play were possible as the home side reached 55-1.

Droitwich picked up nine points on the Monday as half a match was played against league leaders Worcester Nomads.

In their 50 overs, Spa reached an impressive 237-8.

Opener Stuart Bryan was the lynch-pin of the innings with a patiently constructed 84 and he was well-supported throughout.

Max Young continued his good form with an aggressive 37 against some challenging new ball bowling from Elmston and Schiffman and David Lane with 17 took the score to 113 before he fell to Ormerod (4-64).

The innings threatened to fall away as Nomads took three quick wickets, but Alex Kolb played with skill and composure for 37 not out and a late flurry from Jake Young (17) took Spa to 237.

After a lengthy break for rain, Nomads only batted for four overs, before the rain returned and finished the match.

Nomads picked up eight points and with two games to go, they hold an 11-point lead over Pershore.

Droitwich are a further 55 points off top spot, but are well positioned to finish third, with a 15-point lead over fourth-placed Bromyard.

Meanwhile in Division Three, Chaddesley Corbett saw their bank holiday weeekend matches against Alveley and Himley abandoned leaving them three points ahead of the relegation zone with two games to go.

With one match to go in Division Four the title race has been blown wide open, with Avoncroft still very much in with a chance of ending the season top of the table.

A 14-point haul from Saturday’s winning draw against Old Vigornians closed the gap on leaders Lye, who suffered a surprise loss to Cleobury Mortimer.

Croft are second in the table, four points behind the Black Country side but only one ahead of third-placed Ross.

On Saturday, Craig Hughes hit 90 runs as Croft, who were put into bat, made 201-6 in 42 overs. Matt Hare (38) and Dave Apperley (31no) also contributed with the bat.

With the match shortened by rain, Vigornians reached 158-7, with Craig Hughes taking four wickets.
