Droitwich on track after Colwall win
1:42pm Monday 13th August 2012 in Sport
DROITWICH got back to winning ways with a comprehensive six wicket win at Colwall in Worcester League Division One.
Colwall elected to bat first on a dry pitch and lost skipper James Abel in the first over lbw to Mike Rogers.
Tom Coleman (48) and Dan McKay put on 40 for the second wicket, but when the latter fell for 21 to the relentless accuracy of Karl Goddard, the visitors gained control of the innings.
The dry pitch was tailor made for Jake Young’s leg spin and he combined sharp turn with admirable accuracy to claim four wickets for 58 runs from 17 overs.
Adam Crowle continued his good form as he chipped in with three quick wickets as Colwall were dismissed for 133 in the 48th over.
Spa lost Young early, but his brother Max was soon into his stride and hit the dangerous Dylan Marshall out of the attack with a flurry of boundaries.
Young was well-supported by Martyn Davies and when he fell for 24 the score had rapidly accelerated to 88.
Max Young eventually fell for 68 as Ian Cottrill and David Lane saw Spa home with 23 overs and six wickets in hand.
Victory moves Spa back up to third and they entertain league leaders Pershore at St Peters Fields on Saturday (1pm start).
Meanwhile, on Sunday, August 26 the club are holding their annual six-a-side tournament for social players.
There is still limited space for teams to be entered at £30 per a side which guarantees four games during the day.
The first matches start at 11am, with the tournament expected to go on until 7pm , there will be a bar all day, barbecue, bouncy castle plus other entertainment during the day.
Anyone interested in entering a team can contact Mike Wallis on 07704 860600.
Meanwhile, in Division Three Chaddesley Corbett pushed Birlingham all the way before settling for a losing draw.
The relegation battling side restricted their promotion-chasing opponents to 207-8, despite a well-crafted 97 not out by opening batsman Robin Drake. Dave Perry (5-24) and Sam Gall (3-53) took the wickets.
In contrast, Corbett had to cover from a poor start when they lost top three batsmen Sam Boden, Matthew Grange and Rob Hirons for ducks to leave them reeling on 1-3.
But Matthew Yardley (29), Mohammed Ramzan (32) and Nathan Glass (93) got them back on track but once they were dismissed, Chaddesley’s momentum faltered and they ended on 193-8.
With five games to go, Chaddesley are third from bottom just out of the drop zone but only have a three-point lead over Malvern directly below.
Avoncroft kept the pressure on the top two as they saw off promotion rivals Old Hill by seven wickets.
Victory means third-placed Croft are hot on the heels of leaders Lye and second-placed Ross.
A strong all-round display with the ball, which saw Paul Athey and Adam Rodway take two wickets each and Ian Carpenter three, kept the home side to 178-8.
Matt Hare (44), Spencer Cox (52), Tom Murray (23no) and David James (44) steered Avoncroft to 181-3 in reply.
