BROMSGROVE hockey star Dan Fox will be going for gold after being selected for Great Britain’s Olympic team.

The 29-year-old has been picked for the 16-man squad which will take on the world’s best in London.

He is part of a GB squad which is ranked fourth in the world and tipped for a medal at this summer’s sporting extravanganza.

Since the Games were awarded to London in 2005 they have risen up the rankings from 11th and will be aiming to build on the Beijing Games, where they finished fifth.

They will have their sights firmly fixed on reaching the medal matches at the Riverbank Arena in the Olympic Park.

While Fox is now based in Surrey and plays for Hampstead and Westminster, he grew up in Bromsgrove and attended Callowbrook First and Gannow Middle Schools, before moving onto King Edwards VI Five Ways in Birmingham.

He’s come a long way since playing for Olton Hockey Club and after captaining Oxford University’s hockey team, he joined National Premier Division outfit Hampstead and Westminster, where he also went onto skipper the team.

He made his international debut in 2009, and has 50 indoor and outdoor caps for England and Great Britain.

Fox featured at the 2010 World Cup in Delhi after an injury to Simon Mantell saw him called up from the reserve list, but appearing at the Olympics will be the defender’s biggest test yet.

“Dan has played at the World Cup but this will be his first Olympics,” said mother Carolyn Fox, who lives with Dan’s father, Richard, in Marlbrook.

With home advantage, there will be huge expectations on Britain going for glory and Chef de Mission Andy Hunt believes the squad is ready to compete for a medal.

He said: “I’m delighted to welcome such a talented and experienced group of men’s hockey players to Team GB for the London 2012 Olympics.

“The consistent progress that the squad has achieved since the last Olympic Games is really impressive and they now have a fantastic opportunity to contend for a medal at the Riverbank Arena this summer.”
