WORCESTER City have fought off competition from higher-ranked clubs to secure the prized signature of Danny Glover.

The striker has rejected a string of offers – believed to be from Conference new boys Hyde, Telford, Guiseley, Halifax and Solihull Moors – to join City for a second spell after leaving Nuneaton Town earlier this summer.

Glover was top-scorer at the Lane in the 2010-11 campaign with 20 goals and Worcester will be hoping to pair him with player-of-the-year Mike Symons to spark another Blue Square Bet North play-off push.

The 22-year-old, also the leading marksman at Nuneaton with 21 goals en route to their promotion via the play-offs last term, has signed a one-year deal at St George’s Lane.

Manager Carl Heeley said: “Danny was our number one summer target, we wanted him and felt he would strengthen the forward line and we made no secret of our desire to do that this summer.

“It’s been a long process and hard work between myself, Matt Gardiner, Danny and his father Dean. The four of us have been in negotiations for a couple of months.

“There were a host of clubs interested in him so it’s a major coup to bring him back and we are absolutely delighted he has bought into what we sold him and our ambitions for the club. Danny wanted to score goals and get promotion and he achieved both of those at Nuneaton.

“The progress we have made over the past few years speaks for itself and we have sold that to him.

“We are working hard to make the club more professional as we go on, and that’s happening, and he agrees with us and sees us as his next step.

“We want him to continue his progress because he’s done superbly well over the last few years.

“There wasn’t a fall out when he left us and that’s been highlighted by the fact that he has come back.”

City also have Michael Taylor on their books for the new term, while fellow forwards Simon Brown and Phil Green are due to return for pre-season training.

The Worcester manager added: “I felt the difference last year with Nuneaton getting promoted were their strikers Andy Brown and Danny.

“We struggled for large parts of last season to find a partner for Mike Symons and Danny is going to come in there with Michael, who made a wonderful impact last season, and Simon Brown. I am excited by the firepower we have at our disposal.”
