THE King’s School Worcester first XI recorded a convincing victory over the Royal Grammar School in their annual match to round off a clean sweep of sporting successes against their city rivals.

Having won the eagerly-anticipated rugby match 34-6 at Sixways and the football 4-0 at Worcester City’s St George’s Lane in record successes, the cricketers completed the hat-trick in style.

Batting first, King’s posted a competitive 178 all out in 48 overs on a difficult pitch before skittling their opponents out for just 47 to wrap up a commanding triumph.

It was the first time they had recorded a clean sweep over RGS since 2001-02 and the run was made all the more emphatic by the fact all of the King’s second teams won in their three different sports too — the first time all six sides have triumphed in recent memory.

King’s first XI coach Antony Gillgrass said: “This season, the cricket has gone much better than I could have possibly hoped for given we’ve got such a young side.

“There are five boys who are 15 or under in the regular side — they are very good players, but inexperienced at first-team level.

“We have won the vast majority of our games this year, beating the likes of Bromsgrove School and Monmouth.

“Saturday’s game against RGS was always going to be tough, but we couldn’t have played any better.

“All the plans fell into place — we batted well on a wet track, posted a total that was always going to be difficult to get and then we bowled straight and quick to ask questions of the batsmen.

“On the day, they didn’t have the answers.

“Captain Joe Fowles top-scored with 41, while Ali Hunt got 40 and Josh Tongue added 30.

“Bowling-wise, Josh, who is only 14, bowled very straight and quick and returned figures of 5-4 from six overs with four maidens.

“I didn’t see such a comfortable win coming — RGS are a good side but didn’t play well on the day, whereas we did. Considering the youth and inexperience of my side, I couldn’t have asked for more.”

On King’s sporting dominance this season, Gillgrass added: “Not so much in cricket, but more so in football and rugby, we’ve had a very strong upper and lower sixth this year with a lot of depth in both.

“The footballers only lost two out of 18 games and had had a very successful season in the run-up to the RGS game, so it wasn’t a fluke on the night.”
