WORCESTER St John’s Cycling Club ace Mark Corbett suffered a spectacular crash at the Stourport circuit races.

He produced a strong performance early on to break away from the bunch but then dropped back into the main group.

Coming into the final five laps, Corbett attacked again and pulled out a race-winning gap only to catch his inside pedal on the hairpin bend and crash.

The leaders passed him on the deck but the Worcester racer managed to remount and finished the race bloodied and bruised, rueing a costly mistake.

Earlier, in his first attempt at a 50-mile time trial, busy Corbett was fourth in the Bristol South CC event in tough, windy conditions that left several competitors unable to finish.

He was disappointed not to break the two-hour barrier, clocking two hours two minutes 34 seconds. Mark Ashurst from Somerset RC won in 1.58.05.

Corbett also finished seventh in the sprint at the 60-mile Stafford Grand Prix road race.

He joined a 13-rider front group with 55 miles left and they established a lead of nearly two minutes.

The advantage tumbled to only 20 seconds with 10 miles to go but the group stayed away to the end.

On the final steep bank, a few gaps opened up and Corbett tried to close but ended seventh.

Meanwhile, Team Echelon-Rotor members won the team event at the Welsh 25-mile Time Trial Championships.

Of the 120 entrants in the main event, Simon Harradine placed best of the Pershore-based team with third in 51.01.

Tim Wood was fifth in 52.39 and Alan Warburton’s 52.58 was good enough for seventh. Bath CC rider Rob Pears won in 49.02.

In a separate event for juniors and women, Tom Ward recorded a personal best of 53.12, knocking off 4.17 and finishing second.

The Redditch Road and Path 10-mile time trial at Alcester saw Harradine have to settle for third place again in 20.53. Dave Dickerson was fourth in 21.21 and Simon Osborne clocked 22.39, while team boss Wood suffered a puncture in the wet conditions and failed to finish.

Vince Page secured a fine third place in the Stourport circuit races.

In the Hinckley CRC 10-mile event, Brian Newton and Arja Scarsbrook battled the conditions to record 25.51 and 26.23 respectively. Matt Clinton won in 21.00.
