CAPTAIN Mark Evenson hailed the impact of batsman Ashley Newdick after his impressive unbeaten century inspired Bromsgrove to victory Coventry and North Warwickshire.

Opener Newdick was present from the start during the Boars’ innings with a stunning 165 not out, as they trounced their opponents in the Birmingham and District League Division One by 83 runs.

The red-hot batsmen’s superb century included 18 fours and three sixes.

Evenson believes the batsman, who chooses to wearing a red cap rather than a helmet at the crease, has been in fine form all season.

“Ashley has played really well all season but this was an incredible innings by him,” commented the captain.

“He’s done it once before against Brockhampton but this was even more impressive.

“He was also well-supported by George Rhodes and the rest of the team and to make 300 runs in 55 overs says what a good team effort it was too.”

Such is the impact of Newdick, Evenson feels he plays a central role in Bromsgrove’s success as they aim to win promotion to the Premier Division this summer.

He added: “When Ash is playing like that we know we just have to support him and he becomes central to our success.”

Victory saw Bromsgrove bounce back from a heavy defeat to Walmley last week and cement second place in the division, as they trail leaders Wombourne by 12 points.

On Saturday, the Boars make the trip to Warwickshire to take on mid-table Kenilworth Wardens (noon start).

However, Evenson believes the Division One stalwarts will provide a tough test.

He said: “Kenilworth are a tough team that will be hard to beat.

“They’re a bit like us in the respect they’ve got lots of players who can do lots of little bits but when they play well they’re very good.”

Bromsgrove have one injury worry, with Tom Hill set to miss the game.
