AS the winter season draws to a close, several of Droitwich Tennis Club’s mixed doubles teams were in action over the weekend.

The mixed B team played Worcester at home.

First pair Joe Maidment and Caroline Brookes had an excellent game against the Worcester first pair but eventually lost out in two straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Second pair Margaret Hughes and Neil Bates faired little better, going down 6-1 in the first set before putting up a much better fight in the second, losing it eventually 7-6.

After the turn around, Hughes and Bates lost against a much better Worcester pairing, but put up a strong defence and eventually lost 6-2, 6-4.

Maidment and Brookes had a much closer game against Worcester’s second pairing, but could not quite get over the finishing line.

The 4-0 defeat on the day possibly means relegation for Droitwich with just one match remaining in the season. The mixed D team faired slightly better at home to Inkberrow, losing 3-1 on the day.

Chris Sellers and Phil Woodhouse were the sole winners, beating the Inkberrow second pairing 6-2, 6-3 before losing closely in their second rubber.

The Droitwich second pairing of Alison Whiteman and Nick Dickson played well but unfortunately lost both rubbers, giving Inkberrow the deserved victory on the day.

With the summer fixtures meeting successfully completed last week, the new season looms large over the horizon with a record 15 teams from Droitwich Tennis Club being entered this year. Anyone wishing to find out more about the club, can e-mail neilbates1963@sky.com for more information.
