Six appeal for Bromsgrove and Redditch

BROMSGROVE and Redditch AC Masters athletes competed in the Midlands Masters Athletic Club Championships held at the Norman Green track, Solihull.

The club put out some strong competition. Records were broken and they returned with an honourable six medals - two gold, two silver and two bronze.

Golden performances came from Polly Gerner and Julie Wakelam.

Wakelam was on great form in the Women’s 50 section (W50), jumpin g for gold in the triple jump covering a distance of 7.66m and also earned a highly respectable bronze in the hammer throw. She set a new club record in both events.

In the same bracket, Gerner won the 100m in a time of 14.7 seconds.

Also competing for B and R AC were Rita Brownlie and Yasmine Al-Daftary.

Brownlie set a new club record in the W60 300m hurdles.

In what was Al-Daftary’s first championship, she was the sole competitor in the W35 Pole-vault and very narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the 100m.

From the male contingent, David Carney showed the strength of his middle distance running, winning silver in the 800m, M70 category and running a very strong performance in the 400m.

Calvin Scoltock showed true grit in the M40 running.

It was his first Midlands Masters Championship, and his fourth competition in eight days.

He clinched bronze in the 800m and earned a highly competitive fourth place in the 1500m.

Mike Jones was competing at the top age of his bracket in the M65’s and was deep amongst the competition in the throwing.

He won bronze in the hammer throw and earned fourth place in the shot put.

Athletes from the club will be competing next at the British Masters Championships this week at Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr.
