NEW Ravens rugby league players felt the heat in an open age clash on a scorching Saturday away at Leamington Royals.

Ravens kicked off but quickly conceded a penalty which they managed to field.

Their first set was strong and direct into the opposition’s territory but failed to produce any points. Royals eventually broke through Ravens’ cover to produce a try down their right edge which was unconverted.

Following this both sides traded sets producing some even play before Royals made several breaks which resulted in tries.

David Wimbury, the main kicker for Ravens, attempted to gain possession with a short kick off.

This almost worked but a misfield resulted in another Royals’ score.

Following a Ravens kick off which went out on the full, there were handling errors from both sides.

After a short water break Ravens took the game to the opposition, producing a great break which resulted in a typical barnstorming try by forward Jonnie Mills.

This was converted by half-back David Wimbury, whose overall kicking game throughout the match was exemplary.

The kick-off gave Ravens possession and they probed the Royals’ line.

There could easily have been another Ravens try if the referee had played advantage, rather than intervening with the whistle to award them a penalty, which slowed Ravens’ momentum.

Half time came as a welcome respite in the very hot conditions.

The second half began with more near misses for Ravens before the Royals scored a string of tries.

There then began a series of ‘panic plays’ from both teams resulting in several knock-ons. Eventually Ravens regained possession and captain Liam Dunne scored a try converted by David Wimbury.

In spite of the final score 96-12, Ravens put in a sustained, workmanlike performance against strong opposition.

Ravens next open age match is Saturday June 9 at Nottingham Outlaws, kick-off is at 2.30pm.
