DROITWICH Golf Club will stage the 37th Junior Girls Open on Thursday, March 29.

Girl golfers from around the country are invited to enter the event which is open to all junior age groups.

Beginners can enjoy their first taste of competition over nine holes while more experienced players tackle 18.

The winner qualifies for The Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championship which could take them towards the final in Portugal.

Open organiser Jo Slade said: “Last year’s event was a huge success with 56 girls from 32 clubs competing.

"We are thrilled to be welcoming back our gross winner Sophie Johnson who remained high on the Telegraph leaderboard throughout the season, narrowly missing a slot in the final competition.

"I know the girls who enter are excited about playing in an event alongside Sophie who has played golf in the junior England team.”

It is the opening event in the Hereford and Worcestershire County Girls' Order of Merit competition.

Anne Solloway, Worcestershire and Hereford Ladies' County Golf Association junior team manager, said: “We very much encourage the girls from across the county to enter the Droitwich Open.

"It is really important for the girls to get an early start to their season and to play with their counterparts from different county regions.”

Worcestershire player and past junior county captain Lucy Walton has been invited to attend for the 10th year in a row as the event ambassador.

Slade continued: “Lucy has shown such dedication to her junior golf career and it is a wonderful achievement to have played in the Junior Girls Open for the past nine years.

"We wanted to mark Lucy’s 10th consecutive event by inviting her as our event ambassador.

"Sadly Lucy is no longer a junior so can’t compete but she is a fabulous role model for girls at every stage of their junior golf career.

"The ladies' section at Droitwich started this event to give a special opportunity to young players and Lucy has embraced that sentiment.”

The 18-hole contest is open to girls with an active CONGU handicap of 36 or under.
