DROITWICH will face Whitchurch in the RFU Midlands Intermediate Cup final after a hard-fought 17-12 victory at Leek in the last four.

Whitchurch, who lead Midlands Two West (North) with a 100 per cent record, won 39-5 at home to Newark in the other semi-final.

Droitwich also boast a 100 per cent record at the top of Midlands Two West (South) and entertain eighth-placed Berkswell and Balsall on Saturday (2.15pm).

Staffordshire hosts Leek provided a stern test in a tight cup semi-final encounter.

Spa had the best of the opening 10 minutes with Josh Skinner jinking over the line from close quarters and Bobby Scott-Walker adding the extras from out wide.

The early dominance instilled the confidence in Scott-Walker to take a pop at a drop kick a few minutes later which sailed over with ease.

But loose offloads from Droitwich let the home side back in and they responded with a well-worked but unconverted try.

It was clear the sides were evenly matched and it was no surprise the first half closed at 10-5 with only five points between the sides.

The Droitwich half-time talk focused on keeping things simple and the second period opened with Ruben Staite scoring a team effort in the corner which was well converted by Scott-Walker.

The rest of the half was evenly contested with Leek getting stronger as the game progressed.

They were rewarded with a try from a neat backs move which was quickly converted to set up a barnstorming final 10 minutes.

Despite valiant efforts from Leek, Droitwich held on for a hard-fought victory.

Spa director of rugby Adam Drew said: “Leek were excellent hosts and offered an extremely stern test for us.

"I am pleased that we addressed a few issues from the last couple of weeks, including reducing our penalty count and creating some space in our attack.

"This is due to the hard work of the players and coaches and I would like to commend them all for their commitment."

Spa's pack never stopped with Nico Mason, James Shewell, Sam O’Brien, Phil Horton and Russ Brown all carrying well.

Rob Poke did well at hooker while Staite showed his flexibility by starting at flanker and later switching to centre.

Matt Barnes went from centre to full-back when Luke Penn went off with a head injury.

Droitwich again put their winning record on the line this weekend.
