DROITWICH Rugby Club won their first sevens tournament of the summer.

In the RFU 24/Sevens Midlands play-offs at Worcester, Spa romped to a 55-0 victory in the first pool game against Erdington.

Spa beat Essington 54-0 with Smith, Bastock and Maginnis adding to their tallies and Craig Mortelmans bagging four tries.

They edged out Burntwood 26-19 thanks to Strutt, Handford, Smith and Aron Middleton to top their pool.

Spa beat Kidderminster Carolians in the final 14-5 with Smith and Bastock scoring.

Director of rugby Adam Drew said: “It’s fair to say our success last season was based on the  prowess of our forwards so it was always going to be interesting to see how our backs would get on at this event.”

Sevens captain Scott-Walker said: “I was really proud of the lads on a sweltering, hot day.

"It was great to see the fantastic footwork, handling skills and sheer pace we have in our backline.

"If we combine this attacking flair with the power of our forwards we won’t go too far wrong this season.”

Training is every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm and everyone is welcome.
