BROMSGROVE breezed their way to a clinical 124 run success at Wellington to go second in Birmingham League Division One this week.

Another solid display with the bat saw Bromsgrove post a competitive 228 for five before bowling Wellington out for a modest 102 in just 38 overs.

But Bromsgrove skipper Mark Evenson admitted to taking a real chance when he elected to bat first.

He said: "It was a real dilemma as what to do.

"More rain was forecast so I went with a hunch that it might be easier to bowl with a drier ball later in the game.

"In the circumstances, 228 was quite a formidable score as we had to work really hard for the runs, but I was really pleased with the way the younger players contributed."

Once again, Worcestershire's Alexei Kervezee led the way with 62 but there were compelling contributions from Lewis Cordes with 39 not out, Jack Taylor 38, Ryan Pedley 31 and Jayden Levitt on 29.

But it was the opening bowling attack of Gareth Williams and Alex Wilkinson that soon had Wellington in trouble.

They rapidly reduced Wellington to 24 for three with the new ball, a situation from which they never recovered.

Williams went onto take four for 25 off 12 overs while Wilkinson claimed two for 39 from eight.

Evenson mopped up himself with three for two from five overs, he added: "Gareth was bowling really well as though he was swinging the ball around a corner.

"He was nagging me to come back on again in a bid to get a 'five for' but never got the chance. "Wellington appear to be a side in transition at the moment and we knew that if we could get amongst them early on, there was always the prospect they could collapse."

The result leaves Bromsgrove just two points adrift of early season leaders Shifnal and Evenson hopes to apply more pressure when they entertain Barnards Green this Saturday.

Evenson added: "We've under-achieved as a side over the last two or three seasons, but I look around the changing room now and see the players we have available to us and I see no reason why we couldn't be playing in the Premier Division next season."
