A LATE equaliser by James Lemon sealed promotion for Droitwich Spa Football Club at King George's Playing Fields.

The leaders drew 1-1 at home to title rivals Alvis Sporting Club to guarantee at least second place in Midland League Division Two.

Spa can enjoy an extended pre-season to prepare for life in Division One while sides, including favourites Alvis, battle for the other promotion spot over the next few weeks with their games in hand.

Droitwich started much the better side with Nick Seabourne and Lemon enjoying good chances but the best fell to Max Crisp who from a matter of yards out somehow put a header wide.

Keeper James Wardle also had to be at his best on two occasions to keep the hosts out.

Then on 40 minutes came the sucker punch.

Alvis broke down the right and Dildale Linton teed up Corrie Powell who took a touch inside before rifling a low drive into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

For the vast majority of the second half Spa had difficulty trying to break down a well-organised rearguard.

Home keeper Matt Oliver was adjudged to have picked up a back-pass but then blocked the free-kick with team-mate Crisp.

Seabourne spurned three half-chances by blazing wide while in promising positions and Brad Burgess's free header was easily collected by Wardle.

Jamie Smith's thundering long-range drive forced Wardle into an excellent save.

Three minutes into injury-time a deep cross from Smith was headed back across goal and Lemon, who has endured an injury-hit season, stroked the ball home from six yards.

Spa had drawn 2-2 at Paget Rangers last week with Jack Allerton and Matty Hunt on target.
