BROMSGROVE Sporting boss Paul Smith has been counting the cost of Luke Edwards' last gasp winner against Heath Hayes this week.

The central defender's dramatic late strike hit Smith in the pocket to the tune of £50.

Smith explained: "The money goes into the player's fund to help pay for their end of season trip to Benidorm.

"It's something I've been running for the past seven years and it helps raise a lot of money.

"We've set up a 'Fines Committee' to help the fund.

"Players get fined for a variety of things. Apart from the usual punishments like picking up red and yellow cards, the players are also expected to stump up if they turn up late for training and matches, having dirty boots, arriving in untidy attire and wearing flip-flops in the showers.

"The lads decided that I was getting away with it, so it was agreed that I would pick a player at the start of the season and every time that player scored, I would contribute £50 to the fund.

"I try to make my choice wisely. I can't get away with the goalkeeper, so I selected Luke safe in the knowledge that he always stays back for set-pieces.

"But deep into stoppage time against Heath Hayes we won a corner and he asked to go forward, so I said yes. True to form, we get a flick-on from the corner and it falls to Luke, so it was mixed feelings for me when he scored.

"But that could prove to be a very important goal for us in the context of the title race.

"We made over £1,000 from last year's players' fund and we're already up to the £600 mark this season, so I'm going to be more careful from now on."

Smith did admit to greeting Luke Edwards' winner with a huge sigh of relief, he said: "It was a case of having to win ugly and that's what we did.

"We didn't play well and lacked our usual fluency. We had nearly 1,000 supporters at the game and you started to hear the moans and groans as the game went on.

"But we just kept knocking on the door until the goal came.

"People have to accept that we're not going to play well every single game, but we're still in their fighting on four fronts."

Smith also revealed he would continue to ring the changes and confirmed: "I've got a 19-strong squad of players and they are all as good as each other. I could play anyone of them and it wouldn't weaken the side.

"I will attempt to keep things fresh by juggling the pack as I'm very happy with the players I have got. I have no plans to bring anyone else in at the moment."
