IMPRESSIVE Alvechurch took over top spot in the Midland Football League this week with classic 2-0 wins over title rivals Westfields and Coleshill Town.

But Church boss Ian Long was quick to play down their lofty position and insisted: "We're in a false place at the moment. We've played far more games than anyone else. If the teams directly behind us win their games in hand, we could drop to sixth place.

"Even though we beat Westfields, it's still going to be difficult to finish above them owing to the fantastic start they made by winning their first 10 games.

"Even though we've had a great week, we're still recovering from the poor start we made."

Josh March netted both Church goals against Westfields and was on target again against Coleshill with Danny Dubidat providing the other goal.

As a result March now leads the Midland League scoring charts with 16 goals.

Long added: "I can't fault the players recently, they have been fantastic and apart from winning, we're keeping clean sheets at the same time. I couldn't ask for more."

Busy Long doesn't intend to rest on his laurels and has added wideman Ryan Edmunds to his squad from Sutton Coldfield Town after Royals boss Neil Tooth waved the seven days notice.

Edmunds was expected to make his debut this week against Stourport Swifts in the Worcestershire Senior Urn along with striker Jason Cook following his recent capture from Swindon Town.

Long revealed: "We're building the squad back up again and suddenly there is competition for places.

"I intend to play everyone who was on the bench for the Coleshill game plus a couple of lads from the youth team.

"I have told them all I want them to give me a selection headache for Saturday's game against Coventry United, which will be another tough fixture.

"We are the holders of the Urn and I have stressed the importance of progressing."

Church have been drawn to face Sporting Khalsa in the FA Vase and Long was under no illusions about the difficulty of the task ahead.

The Church boss said: "We couldn't have hand-picked a worse draw if we tried. I always keep in touch with their manager Ian Rowe and he is of the same opinion, that it couldn't have been tougher."
