DESPITE another rain-affected match, Droitwich managed to secure a winning draw against league leaders Colwall, but only just in Worcestershire League Division One.

Chasing 126 to win, a weakened Spa line-up fell just short of their victory target despite the best efforts of captain Martyn Davies, Paul Bryan and Connor Grant, who perished in the run chase as the weather closed in.

It was left to last pair Carl Thomson and Jay De Costa to hold firm and steal the upper hand as the home side finished on 110-9.

Earlier, Colwall’s decision to bat first backfired against the bowling of Phil Thomas and Ash Fearnall, who claimed three wickets apiece as the visitors slumped to 72-7.

Skipper Davies picked up 2-18 in a quite delightful 14-over spell of spin.

Meanwhile, the seconds were left to rue letting Enville off the hook as the opposition’s tail pushed their score to 215.

After a rapid start, the home side were pegged back until the latter stages of their innings, with Karl Goddard recording 3-41 and youngsters Leon Payne, George Taylor and Jonny Keen grabbing two wickets each.

In pursuit of a winnable target, no Droitwich batsman seized the initiative as Spa stuttered to 153-9 with three run outs and a rain intervention not helping the cause.

Following on from his prolific season with the bat last season, Ashley Walton hit 73 – but it was in vain as the thirds were mauled by 153 runs by West Malvern.

The fourth team clash between the same sides was abandoned by the weather.
