DROITWICH Spa's players have earned a pat on the back after the club enjoyed its best season for many years after fielding four Saturday sides for the first time.

The firsts finished a creditable third in Worcestershire League Division One — a marked improvement on 2014 when they survived relegation on the final day.

The star performer was all-rounder Max Young, who scored 829 runs and claimed 41 wickets, while skipper Martyn Davies led from the front in his fourth season at the helm as his beguiling left-arm spin snared 44 victims.

There was also a third-placed finish for the seconds for whom James Hancher, Martin Keen and Rhys John all passed 500 runs. Veteran spinner Martin Woodwood captured 45 wickets and captain Karl Goddard grabbed 38 wickets.

Under the stewardship of Steve Perry, the thirds claimed Spa’s only piece of silverware as league champions.

The prolific Ash Walton enjoyed a stellar season with the bat, scoring with 699 runs, and was well-supported by Under-16s David Purchase and George Taylor, who both made over 300 runs apiece.

Experienced campaigners James King and Simon Holliday ensured that the new Fourth team recorded an excellent mid table finish in their first season.

With Droitwich’s juniors section going from strength-to-strength, the club can look forward to the 2016 season with some confidence.
