Amelia’s games dream

A TALENTED youngster will realise her dream of competing in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai later this year - if she can raise £2,000.

Amelia Martin, who represents the Bromsgrove based Special Olympics Worcestershire team, scooped two gold at the Glasgow 2005 Special Olympics and has now won a place to compete in this year's games in China in October.

But before the 20-year-old horticultural student from Clent - who has learning disabilities - can head off, she needs to raise the cash to fund the trip.

So proud Clent residents have been rallying round to help the talented young sprinter realise her dream. A quiz night is being staged at Clent Parish Hall on Friday March 2.

Charles Jordan the butcher from Belbroughton is taking on the role of the quizmaster free of charge and 'Our Plaice' fish and chip shop in Hagley are supplying the supper at cost price to maximise the Martin family's fundraising efforts.

A summer gig featuring Liquor and Poker is also being held at Clent Parish Hall on July 14.

Amelia's mum Melinda said: "We're very proud of her, but we're just amazed that so many friends and neighbours in the village are just as proud of her as well. We have been overwhelmed with the support we're getting, it's very touching. Amelia is very excited; it's such a fantastic opportunity."

Amelia is one of only eight British athletes taking part in the World Games - held every four years to enable people with learning disabilities to further their sporting ambitions.

It will be her one and only shot at the event, in which she will compete in the 100-metre and 200-metre sprints and the long jump, as competition for places is fierce.

Tickets for the quiz event cost £10 and are available from the Martins on 01562 731197.
