THE nominations are in and voting is now open for 2014’s Advertiser Sports Personality of the Year.

It’s been a great year for Bromsgrove and Droitwich, with residents excelling at all levels.

The area was well-represented in the Commonwealth Games, with Jessica Varnish, Dan Fox and Lauren Rowles doing well in Glasgow.

Up first is Finstall cycling star Varnish, who broke her hoodoo at major tournaments by winning two medals in Scotland this summer.

The 24-year-old put the heartbreak of her disqualification at the London Games in 2012 by winning bronzes in the 500m time trial and individual sprint at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

She also continued her domestic dominance at the National Finals with four titles won for the second year in a row.

Former Callowbrook First School pupil Fox was a mainstay of the England hockey side that won bronze at the Commonwealth Games. England defeated New Zealand 4-3 to seal a medal. Fox was also part of the GB squad which finished fourth at the World Cup.

Cofton Hackett wheelchair racer Lauren Rowles has had the biggest breakthrough year.

At the age of 16, Rowles was selected as part of England’s track and field team for Glasgow, meaning she went straight from her GCSE exams to preparing for competition at the highest level.

The youngster reached the final T54 1,500m and came ninth in a vastly experienced field. She then took bronze at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Federation Junior Games in the U23s 1,500m despite being the youngest.

Droitwich Hockey Club president Paul Woodward was a key man as England LX White won the Grand Masters World Cup. Woodward scored seven goals in Hold for the veterans side.

Catshill’s Clive Biggs overcame a career-threatening injury to take gold at the British Masters Judo Tournament. The 57-year-old had only just recovered from ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments.
