JESSICA Varnish experienced ups and down at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in London.

The 24 year old had an eventful ride in the keirin, finishing fifth after fighting through the repechage and then getting an unexpected call-up to the medal final.

Varnish finished second in the first round behind the experienced Lithuanian Simona Krupeckaite, with only the victor going through.

But the Finstall rider battled through the repechage with a classy and convincing win to take her place in round two.

After losing out, she was handed a place in the final when Russia’s Ekaterina Gnidenko was disqualified for an infringement.

In the team sprint, Varnish and Beck Williamson just missed out on a medal ride in fifth.

Unusually, Williamson rode as man one in their heat, posting 33.622 seconds for the 500-metre effort, putting them into third with just one heat remaining.

But the last heat saw China and TeamJayco AIS both go faster, pushing Varnish and Williamson out of medal contention.

In the individual sprint, she was unable to reach the quarter-finals.
