DROITWICH Amateur Boxing Academy scored its first win of the new 2014-15 season in some style with highly-regarded Joe Doyle defeating the national champion in his home ring.

The 12-year-old travelled to the Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Club on the south coast to beat the previously undefeated Oliver Fenton in a three-round, non-title contest.

Roared on by a partisan home crowd, Fenton tore onto the offensive in an explosive first round before Doyle showed his quality with some excellent inside work putting his opponent on the back foot.

Showing no signs of being overawed, the young Droitwich fighter boxed superbly and it was his superior fitness that proved decisive as Doyle landed some excellent shots and clinched a split-decision points victory.

The win raises Doyle’s growing reputation and puts him amongst the main challengers for Fenton’s under 32.5 kilogram crown, when he defends it in the new year as a new championship series gets underway.

Previously, Joe Freeman took part in a thrilling no-decision skills bout at Walsall against Justin Taylor (Wednesbury) and both boys earned a standing ovation.
